Statement on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility

Captain Avery Museum strives to be a welcoming and inclusive museum. We recognize and acknowledge that multiple groups have contributed to the vibrant tapestry of Chesapeake Bay identity and heritage, but many voices, perspectives and accomplishments have been lost, forgotten, or minimized. The Museum's Board, Staff, and Committees are dedicated to breaking this pattern, and we affirm a strong organizational commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility goals and culture. We will intentionally operate in a collaborative and engaging manner, ensuring we have activities and exhibits that reach the widest possible audience.

Our goal is to address the barriers to full inclusion that continue to impact historically underrepresented groups and build a more diverse and inclusive community where differences are valued and respected, and where all members of our community are fully engaged participants in our mission.

• Our DEIA efforts have been generously supported by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.
• Established a DEIA committee.
• Expanded community outreach.
• Completed the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Fundamentals training course in emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, and using an equity lens. Training was led by the County Executive’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
• Completed initial Individual and Organizational IDI Assessment.

• Increase and continue engagement with diverse communities and audiences.
• Restructure and reorganize our current activities to ensure we have diverse representation of speakers and attendees.
• Establish a Community Advisory Board.
• Create and implement a 3-year CAM DEIA Strategic Plan.
• Create a resource page for other organizations embarking on a DEIA journey.
