Supporting the Captain Avery Museum

Executive Director’s Message

The mission of Captain Avery Museum is to celebrate the diversity of our community and engage it in activities that explore connections to the Chesapeake Bay through the prism of our historic home and waterfront property. Our vision is to be a community center celebrating the culture of the Bay – past, present and future – around three themes: Water as Livelihood in the 19thCentury; as Recreation in the 20th Century; and as a focus for Environmental Stewardship in the 21st Century.

Events are how the Captain Avery Museum provides an important service to the community. In October 2018, our annual Oyster Festival had record-breaking attendance, our Winter Luncheon Series was sold out, Tales of Beatrix Potter and the Parade of Lights showcased the museum, and Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy and Nutcracker Prince was a holiday delight. New programs such as Captain’s Café and Captain’s Canvas brought fine music and art to our community.

We appreciate the support of our Captain Avery Museum sponsors including, ABC Appliances,  A Vintage Deale, Brightview South River Assisted Living, Chesapeake Carpentry, Chesapeake Grille & Deli, Christopher’s Fine Foods, Clark’s Landing, Colonial Electric, D. Miller & Associates, Deale Hardware, Edward Jones, George’s Mixes, Greenstreet Gardens, Harbour Cover Marina, Hardesty Funeral Home, HUB International, JesseJays, Ledo Pizza Deale, Lighthouse Limousines, M&T Bank, Mrs. Moo’s, Pirate’s Cove Restaurant & Inn, Rausch Funeral Home, , Real Chill, Reilly Benefits, Renno’s Quality Food Market, Royal Farms, Schwartz Realty, Sheldon Seidel DDS, TechCoach Plus, Total Wine, and West River Gardens.

We also appreciate our partners in the community including the Anne Arundel Waterman’s Association, the Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy, South County Chamber of Commerce, Community Alliance of South County, National Ballet Company, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, CPASC, Lula Scott Head Start, and the Deale Historical Society.

Our grantors invest in our museum and our community. The funds we receive from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority/Maryland Historical Trust, Four Rivers, and the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County enable us to accomplish so much by leveraging our volunteers and resources. We appreciate their support of us as a partner.

We welcomed new staff in FY19 and bid farewell to others. FY19 ended (in June 2018) with the Board’s commitment to go forward with long standing construction plans to improve visitation to the museum. We are on course to debut our new museum in early 2020.

Finally, a special thank you to our members and volunteers without whom we wouldn’t be here. Thanks for all you do for Captain Avery Museum!
