Maryland Day 2023 at Captain Avery Museum

Sunday, April 2nd, 1-4 p.m.

Emojis for the Chesapeake: Empowering Youth Voices

Gather at Captain Avery Museum for a Maryland Day celebration!

On Sunday, April 2, 2023, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Captain Avery Museum will host an artist showcase and  reception for our heritage-related arts program, Emojis for the Chesapeake: Empowering Youth Voices.

During this program, local students in grades 3, 4, and 5, participated in demonstrations led by local historians, ecologists, watermen, and environmental stewards  to gain a deeper understanding of their relationship to the Chesapeake Bay. These sessions culminated with an art workshop in which the students created a piece of art to express their attitudes, feelings, thoughts, and any conclusions they formed from their day of learning.

On Sunday, April 2, 1-4 p.m., the public will have the opportunity to participate in the same demonstrations as the students. Demonstrations will be led by Captain Avery Museum, Anne Arundel Watermen’s Association, Arundel Rivers Federation, Project Oyster West River, and Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

This program is generously funded by Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area.
